In the course of the transformation of the former Mission Waterfront Industrial district into the new mixed used quarter, the desire for a new focal point and gathering place led to the development of Spirit Square. Key issues for the design were the connection to the old downtown core, accessibility, vitalization of the waterfront and the creation of a multipurpose gathering space.
Construction on a dike and intrusion into a river were challenges that had to be addressed.
